History

The Ontario Indigenous Women’s Water Commission (OIWWC) was created in response to a call from the Ontario Native Women's Association's locals to develop a women’s water commission. The proposed Commission was tasked with developing grassroots capacity among membership in areas such as water protection, conservancy, and management delivered within a culturally-appropriate model that respects and promotes Indigenous Women's Knowledge. The OIWWC membership represents women from all over Ontario including 54 ONWA locals, board members and Elders.

Guided by our Traditional Aboriginal cultural-teachings, the Ontario Indigenous Women’s Water Commission seeks to reassert our inherent rights as Indigenous women to participate fully in the development and implementation of legislation that deals with water.
