Aboriginal Diabetes Education and Awareness

The Aboriginal Diabetes Education Project is an initiative funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care and is intended to help improve the health status of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities through actions aimed at reducing the rate and reported new cases of diabetes and its risk factors.

The program offers a wide range of community-based, culturally appropriate activities and services to Aboriginal women and their families that are focused on education and prevention.

The program objectives are to:

• Increase awareness of diabetes and its' effects on Aboriginal communities

• Develop and implement education and prevention programs for diabetes awareness

• Increase the practice of healthy choices through improved access to healthy food and promotion of healthy eating, physical activity and healthy body weights

• Enhance knowledge and skills to have the capacity to design and deliver culturally appropriate health promotion and diabetes prevention activities

• Leverage partnerships and foster community action to collectively create environments where healthy choice is the easy choice
