Thunder Bay, ON – The Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) is proud to announce the release of the 13th edition of the She Is Wise magazine, honouring the teachings of the 13 Grandmother Moons as shared by Elders of the Thunder Bay region. Today, on winter solstice, we embrace the spiritual connection and cultural significance this sacred time of year represents for Indigenous peoples.
This special edition amplifies the voices of Indigenous women in leadership through their life experiences and work in their communities. Activists, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community advocates, and trailblazers—their legacies embody the teachings carried by each Grandmother Moon. Their stories illuminate pathways of healing, justice, self-determination, and cultural revitalization.
“Each woman featured in this edition carries teachings through her words and commitment to families and communities,” said ONWA CEO Cora McGuire-Cyrette. “On the longest night of the year, we honour their light. These women remind us that Indigenous women have always been leaders. They have always been knowledge carriers. And they will continue to share their journeys through each unique pathway forged with kindness and love.”
Honouring the Moons Through Women’s Stories
This edition highlights stories of legacy and leadership from across Turtle Island, such as:
Charlotte Wolfrey, a lifelong advocate from Nunatsiavut whose decades-long fight to end violence against Indigenous women and ensure community safety exemplifies the teachings of the Spirit Moon.
Kimberly Murray, whose work across Indigenous justice—from Aboriginal Legal Services to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) and the National Special Interlocutor’s office—embodies the teachings of the Bear Moon.
Marilyn Buffalo, whose decades of advocacy work have earned her multiple accolades and seen significant advancement for cultural inclusion in education, reflects the teachings of the Little Spirit Moon.
Each story outlines how Indigenous women continue to support their communities, uplift future generations, and lead with cultural wisdom rooted in the teachings of the Grandmother Moon.
This 13th Edition of She Is Wise magazine recognizes the grounding of Indigenous knowledges with all our relations and continues to celebrate the voices of Indigenous women across our nations. She Is Wise stories are part of the legacy for Indigenous women everywhere, but also the coming generations. We encourage all to learn and share from the wisdom of the 13 Grandmother moons.
